Which trailer can I tow? Towing capacity and hitch load
The trailer must be compatible with the towing vehicle. Otherwise, you not only endanger yourself and other road users, but you also risk fines and even points in case of a check.
Before renting a trailer from us, you can check your vehicle’s documents to see which trailers are suitable for your vehicle.
Towing capacity
he towing capacity specifies the maximum weight that you are allowed to tow behind your vehicle.
In the old vehicle registration document, you will find:
- Item 28: Braked towing capacity
- Item 29: Unbraked towing capacity
- Item 33: If applicable, load increase, usually in connection with a gradient limitation
In the new vehicle registration document (EU vehicle registration), you will find the following:
- Section O.1: Braked towing capacity
- Section O.2: Unbraked towing capacity
The towing capacity listed in those sections must not be exceeded under any circumstances. However, what matters here is the actual weight: For example, with a towing capacity of 1,500 kg, you can indeed hitch a trailer with a permissible total weight of 2,000 kg – you just can’t load it to its maximum weight. This is useful if you need a slightly larger trailer for bulky but lightweight cargo.
Hitch load
The permissible hitch load of your vehicle can be found not in the documents, but on a label near the tow bar. The permissible hitch load of the trailer is also marked on the coupling.
Attention: If the hitch loads of the towing vehicle and the trailer are not the same, the lower value applies!
